Hi Vera - am just catching up with your shows. Can't remember if this was the one with Joan Rivers going-off on one but I do know the origins of that recording.

It was a programme on BBC Radio 4 called Midweek hosted by Libby Purves - she was the lady trying to keep control. Joan was a guest and had spent quite a bit of time talking about her early life as a struggling comedienne in NYC and during this had said that she really was living in the melting pot. She went on to say "I'm so bored of race. I think people should inter-marry. Everybody should be part this, part that and part everything and race doesn't mean a damn thing. It's about people... everybody should just relax, take the best of their cultures and move forward."

The other guest was Darcus Howe, a man born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1943 and who has lived in London since he was 18. Although he has done good work for racial equality he is a notorious agitator and makes documentaries with very provocative titles.

Darcus took exception to Joan's comment that she was "bored of race", probably because Darcus has built his entire career on racial issues and he is one of the people for whom race must continue to be an issue for him to have a meaningful role in life.

The whole sorry episode was captured and transcribed and can be found on the BBC Website here:
